Characteristics of <i>Morus alba</i> L. Cultured by In-Room Hydroponics

Morus alba L., (cv Ichinose) was cultivated by in-room hydroponics. The flavor and texture of leaves were markedly improved enough to be edible. When the contents 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) polyphenols measured in hydroponic cultivar, DNJ increased leaf compared field grown M. alba. However, polyphenols, contrast, decreased cultivar. HPLC profiling revealed marked difference components between cultivars indicating relative lipophilic increased. contents, especially, root remarkably high So-Haku-Hi (Sang Bai Pi Chinese). anti-obesity effect hydroponically further studied rats feeding high-fat, high-sucrose (HFHS) diet with without supplementation dried powders for 15 weeks. As result, both from cultivar showed potential anti-hyperlipidemic functions through amelioration insulin resistance. Differential effects indicated that besides DNJ, may play a crucial role anti-diabetic function L. hydroponics will provide an alternate way cultivate novel resource developing functional foods medicines.
